The Israeli military is not planning to investigate the killing of Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Aqila, according to Israeli media, leading her family to reiterate their call for a transparent investigation into her shooting.
The Israeli Occupation Military Police Criminal Investigation Division believes an investigation that treats Israeli soldiers as suspects will lead to opposition within Israeli society, the Israeli newspaper Ha’aretz reported on Thursday.
The newspaper pointed out that "the killing of Abu Aqila received wide coverage in the international media, and led to a series of strong condemnations of the Israeli army and its policy in the Palestinian territories."
It added that the results of the initial investigation of the Israeli army indicated that there are two possibilities; That Abu Aqila was shot by Israeli or Palestinian fire, without deciding who fired the shot.
Abu Akleh, 51, was killed by an Israeli soldier last Wednesday, according to witnesses and colleagues who were present when she was shot while covering an Israeli military raid in the occupied West Bank city of Jenin.
In a statement, the Qatari Al-Jazeera channel held the Israeli occupation responsible for the killing of Abu Aqila, stressing that an Israeli sniper deliberately assassinated her in cold blood.
