Disturbing figures reveal that Israeli courts issued a total of 290 administrative detention orders targeting Palestinian citizens in the past month, with 146 of these orders being newly issued. This sharp rise in administrative detention has raised concerns among human rights organizations and activists worldwide.
According to a press statement released on Saturday by the Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs, 90 percent of Palestinian administrative detainees are former prisoners who have already spent extensive periods of time within Israeli prisons.
The Commission emphasized that the persistent Israeli policy of administrative detention is executed in accordance with the directives of Itamar Ben Gvir, the Israeli National Security Minister. Ben Gvir openly declared that pursuing Palestinian ex-prisoners is one of his primary objectives.
Administrative detention orders against Palestinian prisoners are typically renewed for durations of three months, six months, or even an entire year, prolonging the indefinite detention of individuals without trial or formal charges. This practice blatantly violates international law and stands as a grave infringement on the basic principles of justice.
Administrative detention is justified solely on the pretext that an individual is suspected of planning a future offense, effectively allowing Israel to imprison Palestinians without concrete evidence or due legal process.
